Around the corner I have a friend,
In this great city that has no end,
Yet the days go by and weeks rush on,
And before I know it, a year is gone.
And I never see my old friends face,
For life is a swift and terrible race,
He knows I like him just as well,
As in the days when I rang his bell.
And he rang mine but we were younger then,
And now we are busy, tired men.
Tired of playing a foolish game,
Tired of trying to make a name.
'Tomorrow' I say! 'I will call on Jim
Just to show that I'm thinking of him.'
But tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes,
And distance between us grows and grows.
Around the corner, yet miles away,
'Here's a telegram sir,' ' Jim died today.'
And that's what we get and deserve in the end.
Around the corner, a vanished friend
.

Bill's father owned and operated a small grocery store next to the Dairy Queen on the east side of town.  When we were 'cruising Main Street' (happened every Friday and-or Saturday, sometimes Sunday night) we would pelt Bill's bedroom window with pebbles so he would join us in our weekly venture into ennui.  Rest in peace, Bill.

When we moved to Farmington in 1952, my Dad was an insurance adjuster with General Adjustment Bureau....so obviously he knew every insurance person in town.  I was just starting 2nd grade at McKinley School....opened late that year as it was just being finished.  I was shy, had no friends in my neighborhood, and Dad made me call two girls and introduce myself....Janet Dickinson and Claudia Martin.  At the time, Janet lived down by the high school (where we went to junior high) so she was very close to me...we lived on Wall, but she went to Swinburne in 2nd grade.   Her family soon built a home on Ute St. about the same distance from me but to the north.  We became fast friends, spent lots of time together over the years...we laughed together, cried together, and her husband, Carter, called me in the middle of the night to tell me she had given birth to her only child...Tony.  I lived in Tucson, and she and Carter came down so we could see that baby....he was gorgeous.  I was working at San Juan College in 1977 or 1978 when her sister, Gretchen, called me to tell me Janet was in the hospital....with breast cancer.  I spent a lot of time with her in the next months...sometimes in the hospital and sometimes at her house helping her decorate and make Christmas cookies--her last Christmas.  We were only 35 when Jan passed away...way too young.  I still miss her!

I remember Paul especially from our days in Boy Scouts, Troop 50.  He was an introvert pretty much like me but in a small crowd of guys he knew well he became quite boisterous and vocal.  The memory that stands out in my mind of him was when we were traveling to Oklahoma City for a Boy Scout jamboree (forget what year so help needed).  We were in the Texas Panhandle somewhere going along at max speed, 55 or 60 mph, when a huge grasshopper hit the windshield and literally spattered across the entire right side.  Paul yelled out, "Boys, bet he won't have the guts to do that again!!!"  Will really miss his presence and humor ...

We attended the same church, St John's Episcopal on Orchard, and of course in Boy Scouts and were acolytes there.  Freddy and I sat next to each other in Dr Walz' class "Southwest History" during our senior year.  He would always go into "exaggeration mode" whenever the class cry of "Don't trump your Hogan" was raised and I thought, at the time, Fred was almost always about hyping everything up into an unreal sense of living.  My opinion was-is that having two sisters (Greta is the one I really remember) and a domineering mother, Sybil, helped in that feeling.  Last time I saw him he was operating a small computer service store downtown.  It's going to be surrealistic to not being able to see him this reunion go-around.  Rest in peace, old friend ... you are with God and I can envy you that.

Ronnie was the first of us to go...Baccalaureate night, 1963.  I believe he had spinal meningitis...someone correct me if I'm crazy on these facts.  I remember that there were rose bushes given to his family on graduation night I think in his memory from all of us.  Still makes me sad that he is gone.
